Materials Science

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Über das Programm

Materials science is one of the key technologies for solving our time's societal challenges (e.g., energy transition). As a bridging discipline between the natural sciences and engineering, it tackles the gap between the fundamental structure of materials (electrons and atoms) and the resulting macroscopic material properties (e.g., mechanical, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties). The curriculum is structured into four areas: Compulsory Modules (51 CP), Specialization Subject Modules (30 CP), Compulsory Elective Modules (9 CP), and Master's Thesis (30 CP) with preparation (15 CP). During the first year of studies, students deepen their basic knowledge while building up specialized knowledge in two or three areas. The second year involves completing an individual research project in the form of a Master Thesis within one of the many materials science research teams. The program offers eight specialization profiles: Advanced Materials Characterization, Functional Materials, Inorganic Materials Chemistry, Materials Theory and Simulation, Metals and Structural Materials, Nanomaterials and Nanostructures, Polymer Science and Plastics Engineering, and Soft Matter and Bio-Materials. The program is natural-science oriented and interdisciplinary, embedded in an excellent research and industrial environment including 2 Max-Planck Institutes, Fraunhofer Institute, Cluster of Excellence SimTech, German Aerospace Center, and various high-tech companies. After graduation, the degree allows graduates to choose from a wide range of occupations ranging from material selection and counseling to quality management. It qualifies graduates to work independently and autonomously in industrial research as well as basic research in public institutions. Approximately half of all Master's students in Materials Science go on to pursue a PhD. The quality of this degree program has been certified.
