Mechanical Engineering

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Über das Programm

The master's degree course in mechanical engineering at the University of Siegen is aimed at students who wish to deepen their engineering qualifications — nationally or internationally. Students choose one of three English-language specializations: Materials Engineering, Energy and Process Engineering, or Condition Monitoring - Digital Technologies. The program begins with a foundation module that deepens mathematical and engineering principles, ensuring that students with different academic backgrounds reach a common level of knowledge. In the subsequent module "Advanced Engineering Applications," students select courses from elective areas to assemble an individual study profile. Hands-on laboratory courses and small-group development projects provide practical experience. The program is completed by an industrial internship and the master's thesis.

The specialization in Condition Monitoring - Digital Technologies focuses on aspects of monitoring, damage identification and diagnosis for mechanical and mechatronic systems. It combines mechanics, acoustics, systems theory, electronics, statistics and computer science to achieve two main objectives: safety and machine efficiency. Students develop skills in understanding dynamic processes, signal analysis and processing, data-based learning approaches (Artificial Intelligence), algorithm and software development, machine and structure diagnostics, and sensors and hardware for diagnostics. Practical skills are trained using measurement data from various industrial branches including wind energy, rail vehicle technology, plant engineering, and aerospace. This specialization prepares graduates for careers in intelligent mechanical engineering systems, automation, smart and learning systems, and Predictive Maintenance, which are increasingly important in Industry 4.0 contexts.

The Master's program consists of specialization modules in the core areas of mechanical engineering, individual options for profile development, research and practical projects in cooperation with industry and university, and an independent Master's thesis in the 4th semester. The program offers flexibility with a wide range of specialization options including product development, materials engineering, production engineering, energy and process engineering, vehicle construction, and digital technologies.
