Über das Programm

The bachelor's degree program in music theory has three tracks: composition, aural training, and analysis. It is artistically distinguished by the relatively high proportion of instrumental instruction, ensemble conducting and ensemble practice, as well as choir and improvisation. Students receive individual and small group instruction over eight semesters in the three core subjects of composition, ear training, and analysis. The counterpart to the well-founded artistic training in the instrumental main subject, in basso continuo and score playing as well as in singing are courses in the fields of history of music theory, historical and systematic musicology and music aesthetics with the aim of enabling students to work scientifically and to present themselves at a professional level. Another focus is on methodological training, which prepares students for teaching at conservatories and concludes with teaching samples. For this purpose, students can specialize in two of the three core subjects. Students have opportunities for individual profiling in the specialization module, where they can choose from a wide range of events in the areas of instrumental or vocal teaching, musicology, invention and music production. Workshops, music theory lecture evenings and excursions complement the range of studies. The program aims at acquiring profound artistic and academic competence as well as teaching ability. Graduates can imitate a wide range of musical styles, understand complex music in detail, describe its structure and effect, and gain a precise idea of the sound of a composition by reading the score. They develop pedagogical and didactic skills to structure lesson material for different target groups and flexibly deal with varying abilities of students in group settings.
