Über das Programm

The Screenplay program at HFF Munich is linked with other study programs at the university, promoting constant exchange between them. The program includes fundamental knowledge of film direction, cinematography, editing and production. Students learn how to communicate with film and television industry professionals and develop stories ranging from TV series to debut features. They become familiar with distributors, film funding structures, broadcasters and production companies. The program includes regular workshops with professional writers and collaboration opportunities with directing and production students. Students come from various backgrounds including journalism, prose, music, theater, and film/television internships. The program features industry cooperation through initiatives like Speed Pitch, collaborations with broadcasters (BR, Pro7 SAT1, SKY, RTL), and special seminars with industry guests. Training in screenwriting at HFF Munich rests on three pillars: strengthening the writer's inner voice and personal ideas through Creative Writing; learning the rules of dramaturgy; and exercising craftsmanship in study groups. The curriculum is divided into core studies, where students attend classes with directing students and shoot short films, followed by a two-year main study program that includes research skills development, dramaturgy instruction for feature-length films, and work on TV series concepts. The program culminates in a diploma project that can be a screenplay for a feature-length fiction film, research for a documentary film, a TV series concept, or dramaturgical consultation for a feature film. Graduates pursue careers as screenwriters, who are described as "professional dreamers" who prioritize writing in their lives. Screenwriters spend most of their time writing down their thoughts, creating stories based on both fantasy worlds and real events. They develop blueprints for films and often work collaboratively with producers and directors to bring their stories to life.
