How do I apply for a student visa with a green passport?

✓ Answered · 2 min read · How-to · 4 views

Your green passport (Service Passport) grants you visa-free entry to Schengen countries — but only for tourist purposes, for 90 days within a 180-day period. To stay in Germany as a student, you still need a national visa (Type D).

Why the Confusion?

It's true you can enter Germany "visa-free" with a green passport — but this is tourist status. For study purposes:

Passport Type Schengen Tourist Visa National Visa Required?
Ordinary Required Yes (Type D)
Service (Green) 90-day exemption Yes, Type D required
Special (Gray) 90-day exemption Yes (Type D required)
Diplomatic Visa exempt Exempt in some cases

Two Advantages of a Green Passport for Students

  1. Fast entry with Schengen exemption: You can fly to Germany quickly, as no visa is needed for initial entry. Can you apply for the Type D visa "on-site" at the consulate? The standard rule is no — but there's some flexibility in specific situations (see below).

  2. Appointment process still required: You'll still need to schedule an appointment for your Type D visa application and submit all documents. The only difference is that you have more flexibility for short trips in and out of Germany during this process.

Applying for a Type D Visa "On-Site" with a Green Passport

Some Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners' Offices) in Germany allow green passport holders to apply from within Germany — but this is a discretionary exception, and your request might be denied.

Here's a strategy:

  1. Enter Germany as a tourist with your green passport.
  2. Before your visa-free period expires, visit your university's Studienberatung (student advisory service).
  3. Apply to the Ausländerbehörde for an Aufenthaltserlaubnis zum Studium (residence permit for study).
  4. If accepted, you complete your visa process in Germany.

The Standard (Safer) Path

Even with a green passport, it's generally safer to apply for your Type D visa at the consulate in Turkey. The process is the same:

  • Admission letter
  • Sperrkonto (blocked account)
  • Health insurance
  • Required documents
  • Appointment (some consulates offer a fast track for green passport holders)
