About the Program

Ancient Studies focuses on the research of European early history and Greek and Roman antiquity from different perspectives of Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philology, and Prehistory and Early History. The program examines text and image sources, archaeological findings, as well as methods and theories of ancient studies disciplines. It covers the entire literary and material legacy of Greek and Roman antiquity, spanning from the 8th century BC when the Homeric epics were created, to the late antiquity period when the dissolution of the Roman Empire led to the formation of early medieval successor states and the Byzantine Empire. The study also includes the material tradition of European prehistory and early history. The Bachelor's program in Ancient Studies offers four modularized study areas from the subjects of Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philology, and Prehistory and Early History, each comprising 62 CP. Students must fully study one area as their first major subject (74 CP including Bachelor thesis and colloquium), a second major subject (50 CP), and the remaining two study areas (44 CP combined). Additionally, 12 CP are allocated to key competencies.
