The Asian Studies program at the Institute of Oriental and Asian Studies (IOA) offers a comprehensive study of societies, languages, cultures, art and religions rooted in Asia and the Middle East. Students choose a regional or methodological specialization and acquire language proficiency, region-specific knowledge, and fundamental knowledge of humanistic and socio-scientific methods. Content focus varies depending on subject-specific focus, ranging from history and cultural studies, art, religion, literature, philosophy to economics, social sciences, international politics and cooperation. Students are required to acquire practical knowledge of an Asian language (Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Persian, Tibetan, Turkish or Vietnamese) through a required language minor.
