About the Program

The Chemistry (Teaching at Gymnasiums) program prepares students to become chemistry teachers at German high schools (Gymnasiums). The curriculum includes both subject-specific training in chemistry and didactic education. Some lectures, seminars, and practical courses are offered jointly with the Bachelor/Master Chemistry program. As part of the didactic training, students become familiar with the basics of lesson planning and optimization and have the opportunity to gain initial teaching experience through internships. The program requires 105 credit points in subject-specific training and 30 credit points in subject-didactic education. After successfully completing the First State Examination, graduates begin their professional career with a teaching traineeship (Referendariat), which concludes with the Second State Examination. The degree is equivalent to a Master's degree and also qualifies graduates to pursue a doctorate.
