Computational Linguistics

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

About the Program

Computational Linguistics is an exciting degree program at the interface of linguistics and computer science. Computational Linguistics researches the processing of human language. Its models provide answers to questions about how language works, how language, thinking and communication are connected, and how language-understanding systems can be implemented on computers. Computational Linguistics is an essential part of modern information technology: search engines, machine translation systems, and speech dialogue systems are just some of its numerous application areas. The program uses knowledge about the sound, sentence, and meaning structure of linguistic expressions to develop computer models for understanding, producing, and learning language. It uses content and methods from computer science, linguistics, cognitive science, and mathematical foundations such as formal logic and statistics. The Bachelor's program comprises 180 credit points from areas including mathematical foundations, linguistic foundations, computational linguistics foundations, seminars and software projects, and complementary subjects. The program concludes after 6 semesters with a Bachelor's seminar and thesis.
