About the Program

The Detmold Young Students' Institute (Detmolder Jungstudierenden-Institut, DJI) is a vital element in the encouragement of young artistic talent at Detmold University of Music. By targeted early fostering of musically highly gifted children and young people aged between 12 and 19 the institute is seeking to redress the shortage of prospective new German students. The central focus of the training programme is the shaping of the overall artistic personality. In addition to tuition in the major subject, minor subjects (improvisation, music theory, aural training, chamber music and choral singing) are taught on compact weekend courses. Individual support and encouragement is at the core the DJI training. The 'Detmold model' ensures lasting success with 80% of students going on to further study at the university.
