Directing

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The two-year Master's degree program in Directing with a focus on musical theater or acting enables students to deepen their artistic research through individual profile analysis and learning agreements. Two projects are planned during the course of the program: a workshop production with an experimental character and a major final project. For musical theater, either a world premiere can be developed in cooperation with the composition and dramaturgy courses or a work from the repertoire can be reinterpreted. The spectrum for directing drama ranges from devised theater, the development of an original evening of theater, to the reinterpretation of a literary model. The program includes professionalization in dealing with the professional theater field through regular round tables with representatives from different positions at theaters. The Theaterakademie works closely with various courses of study at its own university and is expanding cooperation with other universities in and outside Hamburg. Exchanges with European theater schools are an integral part of the program.
