Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)

About the Program

Studying teacher education (English) qualifies you with the professional skills required to teach English in secondary education at a German Gymnasium. The English courses consist of literary, linguistic and language skills modules. The literary modules teach analysis and critical reflection on the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world (Great Britain, Ireland, USA, Canada, post-colonial cultures of the Commonwealth). Students study literature of all epochs from the Middle Ages to the present as well as all genres (prose, poetry, drama), with introduction to various methodologies from literary theory, literary history, cultural studies and cultural theory. The linguistic modules deal systematically with the structure and history of the English language, including core areas of phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, as well as language acquisition and English varieties. Practical courses improve English language skills through regional studies, oral proficiency, reading comprehension, writing, translation and grammar. The program also includes didactics and education classes, with an integrated module providing the option of studies abroad.
