About the Program

The consecutive Master's program Medicine - Ethics - Law (MER) with 120 credit points and the M.mel. degree (Master of Medicine, Ethics and Law) is unique in Germany. The interdisciplinary study provides students with insights into the intersections of medicine, ethics, and law. The program addresses topics at this intersection that are increasingly in focus: medical progress meets an aging society (demographic change), rising healthcare costs create enormous cost pressure, and intensive medical care around the end of human life is considered one of the most important economic issues. The program covers medical aspects through both theory (lectures in forensic medicine and anatomy) and practice (emergency care), legal aspects including the full range of medical law from medical liability to transplantation law, and ethical discussions approaching controversial core questions (e.g., human will, self-determination, euthanasia, fundamental questions of morality).
