Ethnologie

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Ethnology deals with contemporary cultures and societies worldwide. This includes understanding problems of identity, difference, inequality, and cultural translation in their historicity, processuality, and global interconnectedness from critical cultural and social science perspectives. The Bachelor's program in Ethnology (60 LP) in Halle provides students with the most important theoretical and methodological foundations of ethnology through modules on disciplinary history, methodology, and systematic sub-areas of ethnology (religion, economy, politics, kinship, law). By acquiring knowledge and skills in qualitative research (ethnography), students become familiar with ethnological questions, approaches, and working methods (especially field research). The program also provides in-depth knowledge of the regional focuses represented at the Department of Ethnology: Oceania; Europe/Eurasia; Africa in transnational relations. Through case studies, students gain insights into the results of empirical ethnological work addressing central issues in each region.
