Experimenteller Film

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

Experimental Film at KHM encompasses all free, non-narrative artistic forms of moving images. Experimental films have freed themselves from rigid theoretical definitions and the long shadows of structural film that had become rigid in self-referentiality and formal orthodoxies. The focus is on the artist with their individual interests and energies. New forms are generated in which analog and digital processes, low and high tech, original and appropriated material are intertwined. The program explores the genealogies of a 'sub-history of film' and ideas of Expanded Cinema in spatial film installations. Experimental filmmakers move naturally between cinema and gallery, between film and other media. The courses offer orientation in this complex field, convey knowledge about the different mechanisms of the art and film world, and defend film as a medium of radical artistic expression. The Experimental Film Forum discusses student productions, while thematic seminars explore topics of experimental film through lectures, screenings, and film analyses.
