About the Program

The Master Fine Arts program at HFBK Hamburg offers students a course of study centered around their own planned artistic and/or scientific development. With the Master's degree, students can critically analyze, deepen, and differentiate their issues of interest, working methods, and processes. Students learn to formulate and process clear artistic and academic questions and present findings in a convincing fashion. The program ensures close supervision, an open artistic horizon of research and teaching, in-depth, independent and experimental working practices. Students will master artistic and scientific techniques and use them to realize their plans. The program brings together artistic and scientific questions, allowing for crossover projects where different disciplines impact each other. Students can choose from various departments including Sculpture, Stage Design, Design, Film, Graphic Art/Typography/Photography, Painting/Drawing, Time-based Media, and Theory and History. The curriculum includes artistic development projects, academic studies, practical courses, group tutorials, and a final module with a Master's thesis and presentation. The standard period of study is four semesters.
