Gender and Diversity Competencies

About the Program

Whether in a work environment or in your personal life, knowing how to respond sensitively and skillfully to gender and diversity matters and reflect on your own values and behavior is an important ability to have in today's world. Given that the issues related to these topics are often fast changing, it's important to stay up-to-date. The Margherita von Brentano Center for Gender Studies at Freie Universität Berlin offers courses each semester that fit into this area of General Professional Skills. The Center offers five modules (worth 5 credits each) in the skill area of gender & diversity awareness: 'Gender and Diversity: Core Social Categories in the 21st Century' (German), 'Gender, Diversity, and Gender Mainstreaming' (German), 'Diversity Management' (German), 'Gender and Diversity: Projects and Cooperations' (German), and 'Gender and Diversity in the International Context' (English). The courses (3 SPPW) in each module consist of seminar classes (2 SPPW) and an awareness training workshop (1 SPPW). The training is integrated into the courses in different ways and aims to sensitize participants to how they deal with ascribed social differences. Reflecting upon one's own values, modes of behavior, and communication styles is a prerequisite for education in the professional skills required today.
