Global Studies Programme

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The Global Studies Programme (M.A. Social Sciences) is an interdisciplinary programme comprised of sociology, political science, anthropology and cultural geography. Additional courses include environmental sciences, economics and data management. During the two year programme, students engage with these various disciplines at prestigious institutions on at least three continents. The groups themselves are composed of students from all corners of the globe. This intercultural, interdisciplinary and intercontinental experience makes the students experts in the current face of globalisation and their study. The programme builds its curriculum upon two dimensions which both widen and deepen the academic training of the students through four modules: Globalisation, Global Governance, Cultural Change, and Methodology. The aim of the Global Studies Programme is to provide students with the theoretical knowledge, methodological and practical skills for comparative analysis of the social, political, economic and cultural dimensions of globalisation processes in a research-led institutional framework. The programme is jointly organized by University of Freiburg (Freiburg), Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok), FLACSO Argentina (Buenos Aires), Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) and University of Cape Town (Cape Town). Students study at three of the five universities and learn to approach the world and globalization from various regional perspectives and disciplines. The programme has received high-ranking awards such as the BMW Group Award for "Intercultural Learning" in 2004 and the Label of "Top Ten International Master's Degree Programme" in Germany from the DAAD and the Stifterverband der deutschen Wissenschaft in 2006.
