About the Program

Gräzistik (Greek Studies) focuses on Greek literature, rhetoric, philosophy, and natural science from Homer to late antiquity. A special emphasis is placed on the reception history of Greek intellectual and scientific concepts from the Middle Ages to the present day. The study aims to understand texts from ancient Greece in the context of ancient culture and society, and to relate them to European literary, cultural, and scientific history. The scientific approach to Greek texts based on a solid knowledge of the Greek language is at the center of the studies. Interdisciplinary work in the context of classical studies and beyond contributes to securing and rounding off the results. Beyond the specialized training in the narrower sense, key qualifications for various non-academic activities are imparted.
