About the Program

The Greek studies program focuses on Greek literature, rhetoric, philosophy, and natural science from Homer to late antiquity. A special emphasis is placed on the reception history of Greek intellectual and scientific concepts from the Middle Ages to the present day. The selection and focus are largely left to the students' interests and initiative. The aim of the study is to understand the texts handed down from ancient Greece in the context of ancient culture and society, and to relate them to the present time, taking into account European literary, cultural, and scientific history. The scientific handling of Greek texts based on a secure knowledge of the Greek language is at the center of the studies. Interdisciplinary work in the context of ancient studies and beyond contributes to securing and rounding off the results. The training enables students to actively and originally design Greek lessons, including current references. The interdisciplinary approach facilitates cross-disciplinary cooperation in schools.
