About the Program

The History teaching subject program offers a critical examination of the past to provide insights into possible courses of action for the present. The program emphasizes that history is not just about recording past events and dates, but about asking the right questions about our past. Students learn how to deal with and reflect on topics relevant to the present, and how to prepare and convey aspects of the past to specific target groups. The program combines lectures and seminars to provide an overview of selected subject areas and then work on thematic aspects in greater depth. It includes introductions to methods of academic work and subject-specific historical research in all epochs. Didactic seminars on 'historical culture' discuss the social relevance of dealing with the past, while seminars on historical thinking and learning address questions of communicating historical knowledge in schools and to the public. Practical experience is gained through school internships and practical school studies (SPS).
