Hybride Körper und Identitäten im Zeitalter immersiver Medien und digitaler Zwillinge

Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.)

About the Program

This interdisciplinary block seminar examines the transformation of the body in digital and hybrid spaces. The focus is on the artistic and critical examination of physicality, identity, and virtuality in the context of current technologies such as virtual reality and avatar culture. Theoretical impulses from philosophy, aesthetics, and media studies meet experimental concepts of meta flesh, body horror, cyborg theory, and avatarism, combining theoretical input with joint readings and film analyses, such as David Cronenberg's eXistenZ. Key questions include how technologies shape our perception of body and identity, what aesthetic and political strategies hybrid bodies produce in art, film, and gaming, and what 'real' means in the context of virtual experiences. Parallel to the theoretical discussion, participants develop their own media-based works that will be presented at the end of the semester in an exhibition in Munich (February 2026) and in Kiel (June or July 2026).
