About the Program

The subject of the Master's program is the in-depth study of modern and contemporary China and the historical process of its formation as well as the political, social, economic, linguistic and cultural transformations in a globalizing environment. The program provides a combination of regional expertise with subject-specific methodology: the basis for the program is a concept of Area Studies, which enables specialization in the Chinese region, including its transnational and international interconnections, by means of an interdisciplinarity necessary for the understanding of regions and a deepening and broadening of content-related, linguistic and methodological knowledge. The program offers two profile areas: cultural studies of China (focusing on culture, religion, and history of ideas) and social science China studies (focusing on institutions, actors and processes in their social, political and economic context).
