About the Program

The Master's program »Integrated Design Research« offers a specific range of design perspectives in four thematic clusters: Material Systems & Lab Culture, Social & Public Innovation, Urban Intensities & Resources, and Visual Cultures & Politics. KISD aims to overcome traditional design boundaries and combine different approaches, perspectives, and practices, to deal with problems that cannot be solved within a single design area. The program encourages examination of how design can engage with questions of contemporary culture, politics, media, ecology, and urbanity. Students can immerse themselves in an integrated, intercultural and interdisciplinary setting and work in research- and practice-based design processes. KISD offers its students a dynamic culture of inventive, experimental and critical research. Project-based and student-centered learning in inspiring, contextualized problem-solving environments allows students a high degree of flexibility and independence. Graduates of the MA program take on a variety of roles within contemporary design across the globe, including: founder of a design studio, researcher, art director, entrepreneur, project manager, lecturer, senior designer, curator, museum assistant, public relations officer, marketing executive, UX designer, publishing editor, and more.
