About the Program

Romance studies considers Romance languages, literature and cultures. In Italian, the focus is on the Italian-speaking world (in particular Italy, Ticino). The Bachelor's degree programme in Italian 25% encompasses literary studies, linguistics, cultural studies, and language practice. Literary studies focus on the history of Italian literature from its beginnings to the present day, the three major genres, various approaches from literary theory, and literary studies and media. Linguistics covers languages and dialects within the Italian-speaking world, the transition from Latin to a Romance language, the history of the Italian language, investigation of the structure of the Italian language, language and society, and discourse analysis. Cultural studies includes analysis of cultural phenomena in the Italian-speaking world, public discourse, relationships between culture and power, theories and methods of cultural analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches. Language practice courses enable students to speak and write correctly, understand complex texts, discuss aspects of Italian society, obtain knowledge of grammatical structures, understand film and radio recordings, and translate texts into Italian.
