Master of Music (M.Mus.)

About the Program

Building on compositional techniques and experiences already acquired in the Bachelor's program, the Master's program enables the further development and deepening of the personal profile. Even though it is difficult to formulate future career-related goals for the Composition program, the course aims to increasingly enable students to master various ensemble forms compositionally. Since composition is about the unconditional reinvention of music, this requires a strong personality profile. By the end, students should be able to responsibly present and represent their artistic production in society. This ability to engage in social discourse takes a high priority alongside pure compositional work. This includes comprehensive engagement with the works of others. The education at the Lübeck University of Music has set itself the special focus of engaging with the music of other cultures, which in a way shapes all compulsory courses such as the composition class seminar and various work studies/analysis events. Knowledge in the field of electroacoustic music can be acquired but is not mandatory. The primary content of the program is free compositional work, which is comprehensively supervised in individual lessons. Students are encouraged to compose works for a wide variety of ensembles, with larger ensembles and orchestras in the foreground, as well as longer works that require special time design. Since composing such works is inevitably linked to the experience of performances, regular workshops and concerts with renowned ensembles take place. Within the university, a compositional project is developed together with an instrumental class each semester, and 'reading sessions' for orchestral compositions take place at regular intervals. In the seminar events, students present their works and explain their aesthetic positioning. These discussions in the class group but also with guests contribute significantly to personality development. Guest professors from our partner universities in non-European countries broaden the students' horizons and at the same time contribute to getting to know other music cultures. At regular intervals, we also conduct discussion concerts in public and in schools to promote the integration of New Music into society.
