About the Program

Students acquire specialized academic and didactic competencies and learn independent, scientific work. This creates the prerequisites for teaching Latin. The study program strengthens and promotes knowledge of Latin grammar and vocabulary. The focus of the study is the intensive engagement with ancient texts in their cultural context. Text criticism and transmission history are also important. The focus is primarily on classical Latin of the 1st century BC and AD. The Latin studies require a high degree of willingness to work and independence. During their studies, students should continuously expand their vocabulary, grammar knowledge, and skills in scientific work. Regularly offered tutorials also help with this. The study is divided into basic studies (usually four semesters), in which basic knowledge of Latin language, ancient culture and history, and the most important authors is taught in proseminars, exercises, and lectures. In the main course of study, this knowledge is further deepened through main seminars, exercises, and lectures. Students can set their own focus in their studies by choosing their seminars and lectures.
