About the Program

The Latin Studies degree programme, more precisely described as Latin Philology, is devoted to the study of Latin texts that have been handed down from antiquity, including the examination of these in terms of their linguistic-literary form as well as their placement within a historical-cultural context. The objective of Latin Studies is the study of surviving ancient Latin texts. During the course of the degree programme, students will be introduced to the Latin language and the entire spectrum of Latin-language literature. Through the intensive study of these texts, they will learn methods for translating and interpreting Latin texts while at the same time gaining an overview of literary/historical interrelationships. In addition, students will be introduced to core literary studies and linguistics theory and methods and will learn how to effectively apply these. On the basis of their in-depth subject knowledge, students in the Master of Education degree programme in Classical Philology: Latin Studies also gain the ability to analyse individual subject areas from a didactical perspective and to adapt them for effective classroom instruction.
