Latinistik

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Latin Studies (Latinistik) is a sub-discipline of Classical Philology that deals with the entire breadth of written production in Latin. The focus of research and teaching is on Roman literature from its beginnings to the end of late antiquity around the 6th century; its continued influence in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and early modern period is also examined. Text constitution, contextualization, and literary interpretation form the methodological three-step approach of Classical Philology. A special feature compared to other literary studies is the transmission situation and the great temporal distance of the objects. Meaningful engagement with the textual evidence can only take place on the basis of well-founded language and literary knowledge. Intensive study of neighboring disciplines, especially archaeology and ancient history, is required to develop the specific cultural and historical context. The application of literary methodology offers points of reference to new philologies, as well as questions about the history of the impact of ancient literature.
