About the Program

Linguistics at HHU is a skill-oriented, research-oriented, and multilingual program. The program examines the diversity of human languages (between six and eight thousand), their sound systems, word structures, and sentence structures. Students learn how languages differ from each other, what they have in common, how we learn languages, and why we understand words and sentences we've never heard before. The program structure includes: 1) First year: introduction to sub-disciplines of linguistics and basics of academic writing. 2) Second year: development of specific methods and setting priorities in language and programming courses. 3) Third year: deepening theoretical approaches and content, with a specialization module and Bachelor's thesis. The program prepares students for careers in data science, language technologies, public relations, knowledge transfer, consulting, cultural mediation, language training, multilingual team management, and various areas of management.
