About the Program

The Medieval Studies Master's program focuses on European cultures from the 5th to 15th centuries. It takes a transdisciplinary approach covering the cultural traditions of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam in Europe. The two-year Master's program with philological and cultural studies emphases is jointly organized by Heidelberg University and the Heidelberg School of Jewish Studies. It involves institutes from the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Modern Languages at Heidelberg University, and relevant subjects from the Heidelberg School of Jewish Studies. The program allows students to incorporate their previous specialized studies while developing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary focus in Medieval Studies. With its structure of two specialized areas ("pillars") and an open elective area, the "Heidelberg Medieval Master" combines breadth of competence with opportunities for specialization. Students benefit from individual and intensive supervision, participate in regular courses at the participating institutions and institutes, and gain competencies through involvement in research activities (workshops, colloquia, and lecture series) that prepare them for their further professional-scientific work.
