Music Theory

Master of Music (M.Mus.)

About the Program

The two-year master's program in music theory is designed as a classical postgraduate program for graduates of school music, composition, conducting, church music, instrumental pedagogy, and other artistic bachelor's programs, but it can also be followed in depth by a bachelor's degree in music theory. It is offered with the three core artistic subjects of composition, analysis, and ear training taught in private lessons; in addition to composition, students choose one of the other two subjects as their major. In the minor subjects, students are offered a deepening of both their academic skills in source study, music theory writing and presentation, and their artistic practical skills: Instrumentation, basso continuo and score playing, ensemble conducting as well as participation in university ensembles are fixed components of the training. A further focus is on methodological training in the two core subjects, which prepares students for teaching at conservatories and concludes with teaching samples. Completion of the master's program in music theory enables application for a doctorate (Dr. phil.) at the Würzburg University of Music.
