About the Program

In the Oriental Studies degree program, you will immerse yourself in the history, religions, and languages of the cultural region traditionally known as the Orient. The focus of the degree program in Erlangen lies in examining the interface between Arabic-speaking regions (from North Africa to Central Asia, from Malta to Sudan) and the Islamic cultural region (including Turkey and Iran, for example). In addition to Arabic and the history and religion of Islam, students also study other semitic languages and literature from the region, such as Hebrew, examine Judaism and Christianity in the Orient and have the opportunity to delve deeper into aspects of history and society in Turkey. This enables students to gain varied perspectives of a fascinating cultural region as well as in-depth background knowledge for examining current issues. The program aims to get to the bottom of things by examining the history of the Islamic world, the religions of the Orient, Oriental languages, and the rich literatures of this region with the intention of providing sound background knowledge for the consideration and understanding of historical and contemporary topics related to the Orient.
