About the Program

Pharmacy is the science that deals with the development, production, testing, and effects of medicines. It combines aspects from the scientific disciplines of chemistry, biology, and physics as well as medicine. The study of pharmacy, which concludes with the state examination, covers all drug-relevant aspects and includes the following main subjects: Pharmaceutical Biology, Pharmaceutical/Medical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology/Biopharmacy, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Clinical Pharmacy. All relevant steps are covered, from the synthesis and isolation of the active ingredient and its characterization to the subsequent production of a pharmaceutical formulation, proof of efficacy, clinical testing, and approval as a finished medicinal product. About 60 students are admitted to the Pharmacy program at the University of Hamburg each year.
