Philosophy

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Those interested in philosophising are prompted mainly by the desire to subject what is apparently matter-of-fact to a critical elucidation. Philosophers dedicate themselves to analyzing typical fundamental questions: What precisely does justice mean? Why should we think and behave in a moral manner? What distinguishes faith from knowledge? How are linguistic meanings derived? What are the characteristics of academic theory? Philosophical inquiry is often of such a fundamental nature that there is no room for it in other disciplines. Philosophical issues are those which cannot be solved either by formal methods alone ("calculating"), nor solely by means of empirical examination ("experiments"). The central method of philosophy is therefore the critical, exact examination of arguments. The program distinguishes between three main areas: theoretical philosophy (logic, philosophy of language, epistemology), practical philosophy (ethics, social philosophy, political philosophy), and history of philosophy.
