About the Program

Philosophy as a science, unlike specialized sciences, is a discipline not related to specific areas and only partially working with established procedures. It aims at the foundations and scope of discursive knowledge, meaning, and will formation, and systematically employs alternative methods in both theoretical and practical terms. Reflection on these procedures is an essential component of philosophical work. Knowledge of the history of philosophy is essential for this. Factual-systematic and historical-critical work require and promote each other. Graduates in philosophy should be enabled to cope with demanding theoretical or practical decision-making situations in a reflective manner and with analytical thoroughness. The structure of the Master's program and the respective teaching offerings provide the opportunity for independent focus. The research fields of the four professorships - three at the Institute of Philosophy, one in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences - cover essential areas and procedures of philosophy, from basic questions of logic to general and applied ethics to aesthetics and cultural philosophy, and from analytical to transcendental to hermeneutic and phenomenological methods.
