The Philosophy/Ethics program at JGU Mainz prepares students to become teachers at gymnasiums (secondary schools). The program focuses on developing competence in independent scientific philosophizing, which includes comprehensive subject knowledge, problem awareness, articulating criticism, proficiency in subject-specific methods, and written and oral discourse skills. Students engage with fundamental problems of human self-understanding and world understanding, examining the conditions and history of thinking and cognition, the position of humans in the world, the conditions and norms of human action and coexistence, and the status of humans as physical and spiritual beings. The Philosophical Seminary at JGU Mainz is one of the largest in Germany and offers a study of philosophy in its entire historical and systematic breadth and depth. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical teaching skills, preparing students to teach critical thinking to young people.
