Sinologie [Sinology]

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The Master's program serves to deepen linguistic, professional, and methodological knowledge, but above all to develop the ability to work independently in academic research. An integral part of the Master's program is a semester abroad at a Chinese or European partner university. In addition to methodically reflected handling of Chinese sources, theoretical approaches from cultural studies and conceptual and intellectual history are in focus. As a student, you acquire the skill to evaluate transdisciplinary theoretical concepts from a sinological perspective and to make them useful for concrete research questions. The systematic orientation towards questions - not predetermined answers - culminates in the Master's thesis, in which you work scientifically on a self-chosen topic. The program offers two profiles: A) Culture and Society, and B) Conceptual and Intellectual History (bilingual English-German). Sinology has a long tradition in Hamburg: Hamburg is the cradle of German Sinology. For almost a century, Chinese culture has been researched and taught at the Hamburg Institute.
