Slavistik [Slavic Studies]

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The Eastern European states have become increasingly important partners in culture, economics, and politics with the EU expansion. The Slavic Studies program provides fundamental academic knowledge of Slavic languages, literatures, and cultures. This knowledge is deepened through selected thematic focuses and through the study of two Slavic languages (Polish, Russian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian (BCS), or Czech) and their literature. The study enables critical examination of theories and methods as well as independent formulation and processing of scientific problem areas. Students acquire central techniques of scientific and systematic work, research, and written and oral presentation. Students choose a profile language and a complementary language, which is usually studied to a lesser extent. Prior knowledge of Russian and Polish is taken into account when making a selection. During the course of study, students also specialize in linguistics or literary studies. Upon graduation, students should have an appropriate command of the languages and be familiar with the socio-cultural conditions of the respective language area.
