About the Program

The international Master's program World Heritage Studies provides practical skills and theoretical knowledge to identify, protect, manage, and present cultural and natural heritage sites. Students are encouraged to question how the concept of World Heritage is understood and how it functions worldwide. The program combines theory and practice by incorporating various academic disciplines such as humanities, architecture, ecology, management, tourism, marketing, and others. It emphasizes the connection between culture and nature, tangible and intangible cultural heritage, as well as conservation and sustainable development. Established in 1999 at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, it was the first program in the world to design its curriculum based on the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The program offers three study options: WHS On-Campus (full-time in Cottbus), Dual Degree program (in cooperation with Deakin University in Australia), and WHS Online (for students who cannot relocate to Cottbus/Germany).
