About the Program

The IGP (Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy) bachelor program at the Music Academy of Kassel provides high-level artistic and pedagogical training. Students are prepared for careers as vocal or instrumental educators and are entrusted with responsible artistic and pedagogical tasks early in their studies. The program offers various specialization profiles including Elementary Music Education, Historical Instruments, Ensemble Direction, Extended Instrument Studies, Extended Vocal Studies, Accompaniment, Composition, Music Theory, Media and Public Relations, Freelance Musician, Music Practice, and Popular Music. The curriculum is equally focused on artistic, pedagogical, and scientific aspects, with more than 50% of the weekly schedule dedicated to artistic subjects. Students complete extensive internships at music schools to gain practical experience and build professional networks. The academy provides a family atmosphere with approximately 120 students, individual support, 90 minutes of main subject instruction weekly, 45 minutes of class time weekly for performance training, up to 60 minutes of individual instruction in the second subject, up to 120 minutes per week of chamber music instruction and ensemble playing from the 1st year, and 90 minutes of group instruction in Music Practice over six semesters. Students can gain practical professional experience from the 2nd year of study under the supervision of experienced tutors. The academy has a focus on 'Healthy Music Making' and 'Historically Informed Performance Practice' and offers many performance opportunities in the city and region.
