About the Program

The Institute of Biosciences at the University of Rostock offers a Bachelor's degree program in Life Sciences that guarantees high-quality and broad university education oriented to international standards. To ensure this, there is close integration with research activities of university and non-university institutions. A unique feature is the mandatory module in Marine Biology, which, together with the elective modules in water quality assessment and the Marine Biology practical course, serves as preparation for further qualification in the Master's program in Marine Biology. Alternatively, other Master's programs such as Functional Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biochemistry, etc. can also be taken. The first academic year covers the classical research fields of life sciences: ecology, botany, zoology, and microbiology. The 3rd to 5th semesters are characterized by molecular, genetic, and physiological sciences as well as specialization offerings. The 6th semester serves as an introduction to scientific work and the bachelor's thesis. The Bachelor's program in Life Sciences qualifies graduates for scientific activities in companies, environmental authorities, state offices, publishing houses, and adult education. At the same time, a successful bachelor's degree serves as a prerequisite for admission to a master's program.
