Chemistry

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

About the Program

Chemistry is the science of substances and their transformations. It deals with the fundamental laws necessary for understanding the properties of substances and their changes through chemical reactions. The Bachelor's program in Chemistry provides students with comprehensive basic knowledge from all core areas of chemistry, complemented by courses in mathematics and physics. The study is very practice-oriented and includes experimental work in laboratories for about half of the training period. In addition to imparting knowledge in technical and theoretical applications, the acquisition of professionally relevant key qualifications (communication and teamwork skills) also plays an important role. Students receive broad basic training in the chemical core subjects of Inorganic, Physical, Analytical, and Organic Chemistry in the initial semesters. Later, students can take courses in Industrial Chemistry, Macromolecular Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Chemistry, or Organic Chemistry in the elective area. The program is characterized by a high number of intensively supervised laboratory internships where students practically apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in lectures and exercises. The six-semester program concludes with a Bachelor's thesis. There is also the possibility of obtaining a German-French double degree in chemistry in cooperation with the Université de Strasbourg or the Université de Rennes.
