About the Program

The Department of Historical Instruments offers top-notch training in baroque string instruments, historical keyboard instruments, recorder, traverso, baroque oboe, baroque trumpet, and historical plucked instruments. Students also have access to a selection of historical instruments on loan, including violins, viole da gamba, violoni, natural horns and baroque trombones. The HfM Würzburg has a permanent Baroque Orchestra with Historical Instruments (BaHI). Chamber music with various baroque instruments and singing is cultivated under the direction of internationally renowned professors and lecturers. Individual instruction is enriched by seminars on historical performance practice and study excursions to instrument collections. Students can specialize in various profiles: Historic string instruments, Historic woodwind instruments, Historic brass instruments, Historic keyboard instruments, or Historic plucked instruments. The bachelor's degree provides students with preparation for a working life in the field of early music as well as for further specialization through advanced master's degree courses. The central objective is the development of an independent artistic personality, including acquisition of a healthy playing technique at a professional level, development of one's own sound concept, and a historically informed style of interpretation.
