Instrumental -

Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.)

About the Program

This degree program is aimed at prospective students who see their future in the professional music industry. Prerequisites include several years of training on the instrument as well as practical experience through public performances or participation in competitions. Basic music theory knowledge and basic skills on the piano are mandatory. The requirements for the study program must be demonstrated in an aptitude test. In addition to the continuous core modules and after completing other compulsory modules, students choose a profile from the fifth semester onwards, in which they can set individual focuses on music practice, instrumental pedagogy or musicology. The entire study period is characterized by public presentations of artistic learning outcomes in regular class evenings in the halls of the MHL. In addition, concert series in the state ("Wir in") and at alternative venues in Lübeck offer students the opportunity to engage in dialogue with their audience in different concert formats. The Lübeck Orchestra Academy, a cooperation between the MHL and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, provides an opportunity to get started in the practice of a professional orchestra. The MHL is particularly committed to interdisciplinary exchange in artistic study programs. Chamber music as a teaching method is also located in the teaching load of many instrumental lecturers. Student chamber music ensembles are regularly supervised by several lecturers and participate in a cross-disciplinary discourse. The instrumental classes work closely with musicology and music theory. In joint projects, students combine their instrumental practice with scientific-theoretical foundations in music-mediating concepts. Regular master classes also ensure artistic exchange with external experts.
