About the Program

The Art History program covers the history of predominantly (Western) European art since the end of antiquity. Art History is a historical discipline and differs from other courses such as Art Education and Fine Arts, which are taught with different goals, content, and methods in other university departments or art academies. Aesthetics is a sub-discipline of philosophy. There are overlaps with neighboring disciplines such as Classical Archaeology and Byzantine Studies, as well as European Ethnology and Museology. The Institute of Art History is organizationally part of the Faculty of Philosophy (Historical, Philological, Cultural and Geographical Sciences) of the University of Würzburg. The Newer Department of the Martin von Wagner Museum of the University (Painting Gallery and Graphic Collection) is connected to the institute. The museum is located in the south wing of the Residence.
