About the Program

Mathematics is one of the oldest sciences, first developed from the problems of counting, calculating and measuring. It investigates abstract structures using logic to determine their properties and patterns, creating essential foundations for natural sciences, engineering, and economics. The Bachelor's program at JLU is characterized by intensive personal supervision and small, manageable classes. The first two semesters cover fundamentals in Analysis 1 and 2 as well as Linear Algebra 1 and 2. Further studies include modules on Algebra, Analysis 3 (Differential Equations and Function Theory), Numerical Mathematics 1, and Stochastics 1. In the advanced stage, students choose a specialization from: Algebra, Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Geometry, Numerical Mathematics, or Stochastics. Students also select minor subjects with mathematical relevance from Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Computer Science, Data Science, Philosophy, Physics, Psychology, and Economics/Business Administration. Additionally, students acquire programming skills and other important competencies for future careers such as media and literature handling, presentation of complex facts and results, and communication skills for teamwork. The program concludes with a Bachelor's thesis in the chosen specialization area.
