About the Program

The Master Programme in Biology at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf builds upon a three-year bachelor's degree and is aimed at students interested in science. The program is strongly research-oriented with a high degree of laboratory-based coursework and training. HHU offers a wide range of research areas including, but not limited to: biochemistry, bioinformatics, biotechnology, cell biology, developmental biology, evolution, genetics, genomics, microbiology, molecular biology, structural biology, and synthetic biology. In the first year of study, the master's program consists of elective course-work that builds upon a student's prior foundation and deepens their understanding of individual subdisciplines. The third semester prepares the students to conduct independent research. The fourth semester is dedicated to the completion of the master's thesis. The program is offered in two variants: MBIO2 (two-year variant) and MBIO1 (one-year variant). Research areas include genetic and physiological studies of the brain, cardiovascular system, intestine, pancreas and liver for neurodegenerative diseases; bioinformatics, biochemical and molecular biological methods for evolution studies; sustainable food production adapted to climate change; artificial intelligence and data science; computer-assisted techniques for studying microbiomes and pathogens; and synthetic biology.
