Geosciences

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

About the Program

The Master's program in Geosciences focuses on fundamental questions about our home planet: How was it formed? What is its future? What processes occur daily within and on it that constantly change its appearance? As a science of Earth's structure and atmosphere, geoscience is interdisciplinary, combining methods from physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics to study processes affecting rocks, oceans, and the atmosphere. The fields of study are diverse, ranging from minerals in rocks to mountains and volcanoes to gases in the atmosphere. The temporal scope extends from Earth's formation 4.5 billion years ago to future developments. The program also addresses current topics such as the challenges of global climate change, dealing with and assessing natural disasters, and the sustainable extraction and use of raw materials like metals, oil, or groundwater. Students benefit from the broad research focus areas of geosciences at Mainz, including paleoclimate research, geothermal and georesource research, gemology, petrology, volcanology, and environmental geochemistry.
