Metrology and Measurement Technology

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

About the Program

Experimental measurements lay the foundation for new scientific findings in every engineering and scientific discipline. This interdisciplinary Master's programme, which is unique in Germany, focuses on how to measure both large aircraft components and nanoparticles accurately, how to extend the limits of what can be measured up to the realm of quantum mechanics, and how measurements in production ensure high product quality within quality assurance. The program is offered by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in cooperation with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Physics, the Faculty of Life Sciences and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). Students take a few compulsory courses that build on the Bachelor's program basics, while the majority of the program consists of elective courses allowing students to develop a personal profile and specialization. The curriculum includes compulsory modules (Fundamentals of Metrology, Measurement Data Evaluation and Measurement Uncertainty, Simulation of Technical Systems with Python), specialization in one of three areas (Sensors and Measuring Principles, Systems Engineering and Signal Processing, or Measuring Methods and Application), elective modules, interdisciplinary specialization, a student research project, and a Master's thesis.
